China urges EU to address ‘root cause’ of Ukraine conflict

The Chinese Government’s Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs, Li Hui, said that European countries should focus on finding and solving the “root causes” that led to the current crisis in Ukraine.

Li met with the State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Ministry, Andreas Michaelis, in Berlin on Wednesday, as part of a week-long tour of Europe, for consultations in the search for a political solution to the conflict.

According to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, its representative reaffirmed Beijing’s position of promoting peace talks.

Recalling the words of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Li declared that “there is no silver bullet to resolve the crisis” and insisted that all parties must do their part to create favorable conditions to allow the resumption of peace talks through ” accumulation of mutual trust.

“China urges European countries to start from the root cause of the crisis to find a solution to both the symptoms and the fundamental causes, as well as make efforts to achieve long-term peace and security on the European continent,” the official pointed out. Furthermore, he added that his country is willing to maintain close communication with Berlin on this issue.

For his part, Michaelis said that the German side “highly values ​​China’s positive efforts to de-escalate the Ukraine crisis” and stressed the need for both countries to strengthen dialogue on a series of important international and regional issues, including the current conflict. .

The Chinese envoy has already met with the Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky, with the deputy foreign minister of Poland and officials from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On Friday the tour will culminate with a visit to Moscow.

At the end of February, the Chinese Foreign Ministry published a document with a proposal for a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
