China responds to Kissinger on Ukraine’s NATO membership

The spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Wenbin, reiterated this May 18 “China’s consistent and clear position” that “Ukraine should not become the frontier of a confrontation between major powers” by joining NATO. With this, the Chinese side commented on former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s recent statement that peace in Europe cannot be achieved without Ukraine joining the US-led military bloc.

«Strengthening or even expanding military groups is not a viable way to guarantee the security of a region. The security of a country should not be achieved at the expense of the security of other countries,” said the spokesperson during his daily press conference.

The Chinese official indicated that to “build a balanced, effective and lasting European security architecture” it is necessary to make “efforts through dialogue and consultation and find a solution that truly leads to lasting peace and security in Europe.”

“Under the current circumstances, all parties should remain calm, act with restraint and avoid taking any measures that may aggravate or further complicate the crisis,” said the representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the end of February, the Chinese Foreign Ministry published a document with a proposal for a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis. The initiative, which consists of 12 points, calls for respecting the sovereignty of all countries, ceasing hostilities, resuming peace talks, abandoning the Cold War mentality and ending unilateral sanctions, among other aspects. .
