China is upset about being used as a reason for the US to deploy more nuclear weapons

WASHINGTON – The Chinese government condemned the White House’s statement that the United States (US) should deploy more nuclear weapons strategic future to deter threats from Moscow, Beijing, and other adversaries.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington assesses that America has underestimated nuclear disarmament and must reflect on its behavior regarding non-proliferation.

Beijing’s frustration and condemnation came after White House National Security Council arms control official Pranay Vaddi told the Arms Control Association on Friday that the US may reach a point in the coming years where increasing the number of nuclear weapons currently deployed is necessary.

“We must be fully prepared to execute if the president makes that decision,” said Vaddi.

“More nuclear weapons are needed to deter our enemies and protect the American people and our allies and partners,” he said, as quoted Reuters.

Vaddi said that the US is committed to international arms control and non-proliferation regime. “Yet Russia, China and North Korea are all expanding and diversifying their nuclear arsenals at very high rates,” he said.

According to him, the three countries are collaborating and coordinating with Iran which threatens peace and stability.

But an unnamed representative of the Chinese Embassy in the US told the news agency TASSSaturday (8/6/2024), that the White House official’s comments show how Washington is undermining the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime and must stop doing so.

The Chinese Embassy statement said, “The US sticks to a single-use nuclear policy, devises a nuclear deterrence strategy against other countries, and has invested heavily to upgrade its nuclear triad.”
