The 13th version of the CHILEMONOS International Animation Festival concluded its activities last Friday, May 31, at the Awards and Closing Ceremony at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM).
It was during this event that the winning works distributed in the 6 short film competitions, the series competition and the video clip competition were announced; verdicts that were difficult to define and that, due to the quality of the works, led to several honorable mentions in the categories.
In the Latin American Animated Short Film Competition, the CHILEMONOS Festival is a qualifier for the Oscar Awards. This year it received 182 applications for this category, of which 33 works were selected to compete and 12 of them are national products.
To highlight each national work, the National Short Film Exhibition Gala was held for the first time, an unforgettable event where the 12 Chilean short films selected in this category were exhibited, giving prominence to emerging talents, representing three regions of our country. The short films “A story to dream about: the blue egg”, “Frontera”, “Casablanca Brothers”, “Crocodiles!”, “Freelance”, “Marvelous gift”, “Sopaipilla”, “The dreamed life”, “Tribute” were shown. ”, “Two less”, “Vitanuova” and “You are already dead”.
Also, for the second consecutive year, the National Schools Short Film Exhibition Gala was held, where the new professional force was present, current generations that are making their way in the industry from their university classrooms.
Selected participants from Duoc UC (San Carlos and Viña del Mar), Instituto Profesional Santo Tomás (San Joaquín), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, UNIACC, Universidad Austral de Chile (Valdivia), Universidad de las Américas, Universidad Gabriela Mistral, Universidad Mayor (Campus Santo Domingo) and University of Development. The Gala demonstrated the excellent moment that is being experienced at an academic level with professionals in training.
For the first time, CHILEMONOS was present at the emblematic El Biografia cinema to screen a surprise screening titled “SHHH!” It took place on Thursday, May 30 at 3:00 p.m. and 200 people attended, who did not know what the function was about, but left the room with a pleasant surprise.
Likewise, in this edition the high attendance of the public was distinguished, both in the exhibition halls at Cine UC, Matucana 100 and Cineteca Nacional and in the GAM activities. For the exhibitions The conferences were given by world-renowned exponents, such as: Gabriel Osorio and Patricio Escala from Punkrobot Studios; David Bisbano, director of the film “Dalia and the Red Book”; Javi Risco, Bambú Orellana and Paulina Sanhueza from the series “Primeras”; Andrea Cordones, Cristián Louit and Gabriel Noe from the series “Mundoperro”; Gabriel Salas of Baros Studios; Matías Latorre and Bernardita Pastén from the series “Sisters of the Desert”; Fernanda Vásquez, Conny Miranda, Bruno Higuera, Salomón Balut and Felipe Saravia from the series “Vamos Mandy!”.
This version of the festival was also hybrid, for the first time it was broadcast live through its YouTube channel, 5 of MAI!’s activities! Industry Animation Market. The Workshops were “Character design by Paul Badilla, “Antenna cheese: dogs, robots, frogs and cheese” by Antonio Villamandos, “Chilemonos poster and its Making Of” by Marko Torres, “Character design as a narrative tool” by Luna Vargas and “Professional perspective of the creative process of storyboards and animatics” by Itzá Rovira. CHILEMONOS’ strategic ally, Vancouver Film School (VFS) was also present at a MAI! training activity, with the conference “Prepare for the future: tips for making a good portfolio” together with the digital composer at Warner Bros TV and teacher by VFS, Kristine Baz. This activity, like the others, was also a success in terms of attendance.

Regarding the results of the categories in competitions, the jury ruled the following:
For the International Animated Short Film Competition, which qualifies for the Academy Awards, first place was awarded to “Wander to Wonder”, directed by Dutch director Nina Gantz, in the words of the jury, “for its originality, its use of real spaces when animating, due to the very high quality of stop motion animation and the wide range of emotions it makes its viewers feel.”
In second place is the Finnish short film “Nun or never!”, directed by Heta Jäälinoja. In third place, the Spanish work “To bird or not to bird” was awarded, directed by Martín Romero. In this category it was decided to award a Jury Mention to the Iranian short film “In the shadow of the cypress” directed by Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani.
For the Latin American Animated Short Film Competition, which is also a qualifier for the Academy Awards, the short film “La Perra”, from Colombia/France by Carla Melo Gampert, received first place for “the way in which it crudely addresses, brutal and honest its themes with a very strong visual identity and a perfect animation work emotionally moving the viewer.”
In second place was the Ecuadorian short film “The Strange Case of the Bullet Man”, directed by Beto Valencia, and in third place was the Mexican work “Humo” by Rita Basulto. In this category, the jury also decided to award a Mention to the Brazilian short film “Pária” directed by Daniel Bruson, and a Mention for Best Chilean was awarded to “Hermanos Casablanca” directed by José Ignacio Navarro and Santiago O’Ryan.
In the International School Short Film Competition, first place was awarded to the French short film “Le Bruit Du Silence” directed by Marjorie Dutriaux, Téo Frantz, Dora Özal, Damien Rudeaux and Violette Talalaeffz, from the MOPA school.
In the words of the jury, “because of the way in which, with its diversity of animation techniques, it very effectively communicates and expresses the emotions and internal world of the protagonist, using all its tools to perfectly construct the messages and themes it tries to address.”
In second place is the French short film “Au Revoir Mon Monde”, directed by Estelle Bonnardel, Quentin Devred, Baptiste Duchamps, Maxime Foltzer, Florian Maurice, Astrid Novais, also from the MOPA school. In third place was the Spanish short film “Daisy” directed by Aditi Dixit, Joffrey Atienza Zamora and Shecid Domínguez Aguilera from the BAU, Barcelona University Center for Arts and Design.
Latin American competition
In the Latin American School Short Film Competition, due to the high number of Chilean works selected, it was decided to create two subcategories under the Latin American School and Chilean School criteria.
In the first subcategory, the Argentine short film “La Bolsita de Agua Caliente” directed by Yuliana Brutti from the National University of Córdoba, Argentina, was qualified as first place. In the words of the jury, “for its simple script but with a concise and clear arc, for its stop motion technique, its outstanding chromatic sensitivity and delicate lighting work.”
Following in second place is the play “10 Reasons” directed by Beatriz Castañón, a student at the Universidad Panamericana de Guatemala.
In third place, the award was given to the short film “Burnout” by student María de Lourdes Báez from the School of Animation of Mexico.
For the second subcategory of School Short Films, the short film “Devuelta a ti”, directed by Martina Díaz from the Universidad Mayor, was qualified as first place.
In the words of the jury “because it manages to very effectively communicate the theme of Alzheimer’s, generating strong emotions such as anguish but leaving the viewer with the desire to rescue and value the time with loved ones.”
In second place was the short film “Bosque”, directed by Gabriel Miranda, a student at the Universidad Austral de Chile, and in third place was the work “Trasgo”, directed by Mauricio Acevedo from the Universidad Mayor. In this category, the jury also decided to award a Mention to the short film “Ngau Kahua”, directed by Loreto Gómez, also a student at the Universidad Mayor.
Video clips
For the Latin American Animated Video Clip Competition, the winner for Best Video Clip for All Viewers was “Atómica” directed by Argentines Facundo Quiroga, Sebastián García and Juan Nodalino, “for its originality, its perfectly executed animation, its beautiful color palette and its “an otherworldly art direction, reveals a level of millimetric technical precision and offers a unique audiovisual experience.”
It was decided to give a Jury Mention to the video clip “All the best” by Argentine Pablo Rafael Roldán. The winner for Best Children’s Video Clip was “ABRAKBÇA – RAPdão” by Brazilian Pedro Peluso. A Jury Mention was also awarded to the children’s video clip “El pulpo cook” by Argentine Juan Nadalino.
Finally, in the Latin American Animated Series Competition, first place went to “Wake up, Carlo!” by the Brazilian Juliano Enrico, “for his exceptional work with surreal humor and timing, and his creativity from a narrative and visual point of view, it is a bomb that despite being universal never loses its Brazilian essence.”
In second place was the Chilean production “Primeras”, directed by Bambú Orellana and Paloma Mora and third place was awarded to the Mexican series “Rey Mysterio vs La Oscuridad”, directed by Calavera Hermanos.
This 13th version of the CHILEMONOS Festival took place from May 27 to 31 with a complete calendar of free, in-person activities carried out in the facilities of the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM), along with exhibitions of the categories in competition at Sala Cine UC, Cineteca Nacional de Chile and at Matucana 100. In addition, a surprise screening entitled SHHH! in the emblematic El Biographer cinema. The short films, series and video clips of the official selections were available on the Ondamedia platform from May 3 to 31 for the entire Latin American territory.
CHILEMONOS Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes, encourages and develops national and Latin American animation towards the world; through the implementation and support of training activities and international meetings within the framework of the animated industry.
The Foundation has 5 lines of action: Culture, Industry, Training, Research and Dissemination, from which action units are implemented for the creation and training of new audiences.

The 13th CHILEMONOS International Animation Festival is hosted by the Digital Animation School of Universidad Mayor as its Academic Host. CHILEMONOS Foundation is part of the Support Program for Collaborating Cultural Organizations of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, which seeks to strengthen and provide continuity to private and non-profit cultural institutions and organizations. This program is also part of the Financing System for Organizations and Cultural Infrastructure of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage that integrates, articulates and coordinates in a transversal way the plans, programs and funds aimed at the promotion and support of organizations, cultural infrastructure, and artistic mediation. All this with a decentralized vocation, participatory mechanisms, and the promotion of the creation of networks and associations.
