A new World Accordion Cup will be held between July 23 and 27 in Kansas City, United States, organized by the association of “Accordionists, Teachers and Guides” (ATG Association). On this occasion, the accordionist, composer and director of the Chilean Accordion Institute, Joaquín Muñoz Donoso, will represent our country participating in four of the more than fifteen categories that the championship includes.
The competition will take place within the context of the Extravaganza Festival, in honour of the renowned accordionist and teacher Joan C. Sommers, who is celebrating her 90th birthday. This festival will feature various activities such as workshops, concerts, exhibitions and the professional competition where Joaquín Muñoz Donoso will compete against more than 100 accordionists from around the world. The best performers will offer a special concert on the “winners’ night”.
Joaquín Muñoz Donoso has already participated in five international competitions, managing to obtain 1st place in the 2016 International Competition of Canada. Then, in 2019, he was crowned champion of South America in the region’s competition and, in 2022, he achieved 3rd place in the World Cup in Switzerland. In this new international competition, he will perform in four categories: Variety Category, Master Category, Avant-garde Music Category and WORLD Cup Category.
On representing Chile, Joaquín Muñoz Donoso says that “it is always a great responsibility that I take with affection, caution, courage and character. I always try to bring the culture of my country, the language, the food, the music and, especially, to the top, to show the development of the talent that exists in Chile with the accordion, thus visualizing what we have done at the Entre Fuelles Foundation and the connections that have been made at an international level with collaborations in different countries. Each conversation is an opportunity to show the projects that we are doing in Chile and invite them to get to know the country.”
The accordionist, composer and director is confident about his participation, for which he has been preparing for months, and explains: “My expectation for this competition is to win one of the categories, but mainly the avant-garde music category, where I will bring contemporary Chilean pieces. I will also win the WORLD Cup category, which is one of the most important and for which I have been preparing for months with my teacher from New Zealand, Grayson Masefield.”
“Furthermore, an event like this represents a great opportunity to generate encounters and cultural exchanges with other countries. In this way, invitations are given to foreign exponents to our country and, of course, professional work associated with the Entre Fuelles Foundation of Chile together with the ATG Association of the United States begins, promoting collaboration for the development of the accordion in both countries,” emphasizes Joaquín Muñoz Donoso.
