A child named Ahnaf Tahmid Aiham (10) died while undergoing circumcision at a diagnostic center in Malibagh of the capital. This is the second incident in the last two months. Children’s Rights Advocacy Coalition in Bangladesh expresses deep concern in this matter and says that the incident of Ayham’s death should be promptly investigated and exemplary punishment should be taken against those responsible. At the same time, the organization strongly urged to ensure proper treatment and safe healthcare for children.
In a press release, the organization says, the child Ahnaf Tahmid Aiham was a fourth-grade student of Motijheel Ideal School and College. His father Fakhrul Alam took him to the JS Hospital in Malibagh of the capital for circumcision on February 20 (Tuesday) evening. Relatives alleged that the doctors made Ahnaf unconscious with anesthesia at around eight o’clock in the night, ignoring their request. After that the child did not regain consciousness. After some time the child was declared dead by the hospital. In the past there have been cases of child deaths during circumcision, which is worrying everyone. Often news of medical negligence in the provision of health care to children, newborns and pregnant women is seen in the media.
Proper treatment and safe healthcare are essential to ensure a child’s chance to live a normal life. The death of two children during circumcision in the capital itself within a short span of time proves the need to strengthen the monitoring system in the health sector. Exemplary legal action should be taken against the responsible persons subject to speedy and impartial investigation to prevent recurrence of such incidents. At the same time, to ensure proper medical care, the organization is expecting a responsible role of appropriate authorities in following the instructions of the High Court to publish the list of all licensed and unregistered private hospitals in the country.
