Miraculously, the 15-year-old child survived the brutal attack.
Matar was treated for his injuries at the Nasser Medical Hospital in Khan Yunis. An Israeli soldier shot him twice at close range, hitting him in the shoulder and stomach. The bullet exited his body through his back.
Israeli army attacks on Saturday killed 274 Palestinians and injured 700 others in a massacre that followed artillery bombardment and massive airstrikes on refugee camps.
Matar was walking on the road when a series of explosions started. He did not expect that the area where he lived would be turned into a killing field by the Israeli army.
He explained, “Within seconds, Israeli helicopters flew overhead and fired randomly at the street where I was walking.”
He immediately headed to his house and gathered with his family members in the basement for shelter.
A few minutes later, the family heard the sound of Israeli tanks in the area, so they ran to the first floor, as they thought it would be safer.
Soon after, Israeli soldiers stormed his family’s home. “There were about 10 people in the house, and suddenly the soldiers took my brother, father and grandfather, blindfolded them and covered their heads with black bags,” he explained.
