The port authorities prohibited the sailing of the ship, in which the 42-year-old worker lost his life yesterday
A 44-year-old workshop manager shipbuilding repair works was arrested yesterday from port authority of Chalkidaafter the fatal occupational accident which cost the life of one 42-year-old worker.
The 42-year-old was working on a Cypriot-flagged passenger ferry, which was docked at the facilities of Shipyards of Chalkidawhen a part of the ship’s hatch broke off and fell on him, causing him to find instant death.
Officers of the Coast Guard and a team of the Fire Department immediately went to the spot where the tragic incident took place. The 42-year-old worker was transported by EKAB ambulance to the Chalkida General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to what was announced by the Headquarters of the Coast Guard, the preliminary investigation of the case has been undertaken by the Central Port Authority of Chalkida, while the ship was forbidden to sail until the presentation of a certificate by the taxonomist who monitors it.
The body of the 42-year-old worker is to be transferred to the Forensic Laboratory of the University of Athens for an autopsy.
