Drawing, even more than painting, puts us in the presence of the artist. With the simplicity of the means he uses, with his spontaneity, he invites us to the intimacy of the gesture that takes place directly on paper. It also allows us to observe the development of a thought: we see the hand that hesitates, develops, searches, plans, copies, reports. Unlike engraving, of which it is graphically cousin, the drawing is unique. This singularity makes it moving.
In many cases the drawing is a dialogue between the artist and himself. In others, it is with members of his laboratory or with a sponsor that he dialogues. Art historian Jean Leymarie, author of Drawing. History of an art, in Skira, he sees it as the “matrix of art”. The drawing precedes, it is often a project, that is, a drawing. And the exhibition inaugurated at the Jenisch Museum in Vevey, entitled I draw drawings (a drawing, designs) – edited by Emmanuelle Neukomm and Pamella Guerdat, assisted by Leïla Thomas – plays precisely on this double meaning that the Italian language has preserved.
