In an interview with Flemish media, Caroline Gennez defends Belgium’s position in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. “In this war, the Belgian Development Cooperation chose the side of civilian victims. Hamas killed, kidnapped or raped 1,200 Israelis. This is a violation of international law and the laws of war. But Israel, as an occupying power, has been violating international law for years even in the West Bank and Gaza. Civilians are always the victims,” says the minister.
On the other hand, Caroline Gennez strongly questions Germany’s position within the EU regarding this conflict. The state does not tolerate criticism of Israel. “I have always admired Germany for its ability to face its past when it comes to war. This is above all what allowed him to participate in the foundation of the European project. It is therefore difficult to understand that this same Germany allows itself to be deceived to such an extent by this Israeli government which carries out a shameless colonization policy,” continues the Belgian politician.
Caroline Gennez recalls that within the EU no member state challenges Israel’s right to exist. “But this is precisely why we should not stand by and watch so much disproportionate violence against the civilian population, even if it is retaliation for an act of terror,” she believes.
The Minister of Development Cooperation concludes by asking a “crucial” question to Germany: “German friends: will you really find yourself on the wrong side of history twice? Will we continue to stand by in case of ethnic cleansing? “Never again,” right? I therefore hope that Germans know how to look deep into their hearts, without letting themselves be influenced by their own historical traumas. We must always try to overcome a trauma, no matter how difficult it may be.”
