A cargo carrying coal, named MV Sakib Biva-2, has sunk in Bhairav river at Abhaynagar in Jessore. The accident happened on Sunday (April 14) at a place called Nonaghat in Nawapara river port area. The ship was carrying about 685 metric tons of coal when it sank.
An importing company named JHM Group imported the coal from Indonesia and brought it to Nawapara river port area of Abhaynagar.
Sources of the importing company said that a mother vessel imported coal from Indonesia and placed it at Harbaria point of Mongla port. 685 metric tonnes of coal was loaded from the mother vessel to a cargo ship named MV Saqib Biva-2. The vessel left for Nawapara river port in Abhaynagar last Friday. On Saturday evening reached a place called Nonaghat in the river port area.
Billal Hossain, master of MV Sakib Viva-2 ship, said that while the ship was turning, the bottom of the river hit the ground. The bottom of the ship burst. Water started entering the ship from Sunday morning. As the river is low in the morning, the water starts coming in slowly. At one point, when the ship sank, I, along with the 11 members of the ship along with the steersman, went to the river bank.
Rahul Dev, logistics manager of JHM Group’s Nawapara office, said that the coal recovery process has been started since Monday. The extent of the damage will not be known until rescue operations are over.
In this regard, Masood Parvez, Deputy Director of Nawapara River Port, said that we have received news that a cargo ship carrying coal has partially sunk in Bhairav River. Further action will be taken after looking into the matter.
