The official data for 2023 will only be ready on January 3, but we don’t have to make predictions until this year’s bestseller. This became clear quite early, when already in January 2023 Tesla lowered prices quite sharply. The effect was not long in coming, and when Tesla was also able to deliver, the Tesla Model Y, in particular, quickly caught on.

Preliminary statistics
Elbilstatistikk.no states that in the calendar year 2023, 23,368 Tesla Model Ys were registered in Norway. This is almost four times number two on the list. There we find the VW ID.4, with 6,568 cars. Third place went to Skoda Enyaq, which managed to register 6,213 cars by the end of the year.
The normally bitter fourth place went to the Toyota bZ4X, but we doubt Toyota considers it very bitter. They had a rocky start with this model, but despite this they sold and registered a fair number of bZ4Xs, which has to be considered their first sincere attempt at an electric car. One wonders how many could have been sold without the initial difficulties, which fortunately seem to have been resolved.

We can clearly see that the brand is still important for people’s choice of car if we compare the Toyota bZ4X with the Subaru Solterra. Basically the cars are the same and built next to each other. However, only 543 examples of the Subaru Solterra were registered, compared to 5,366 examples of the bZ4X.
Several actors
As we discussed earlier, it is not easy to launch new brands in today’s market. Chinese manufacturers learned this the hard way, because at the beginning of autumn we calculated that all Chinese brands together barely achieved a market share of less than 6%, including sinkers and laces.
Chinese electric car flop?
But it’s not just the Chinese who are suffering. Over the past year, popular brands have been painfully aware of Tesla’s dominance over their wallets. Because when a single model – the Tesla Model Y – gets away with about 6.5% of the pie, there’s much less pie left for the others. Especially when there have also been several new players who also want a piece of the pie. But the market is still made up of a single pie to be distributed to everyone. And then the fact that the cake in 2023 was decidedly much smaller than the previous year does not improve the situation.
