“Peace is possible, peace is a duty, peace is the main responsibility of all…”. This message from Pope Francis was the reference of the Diocese of Valledupar in promoting the signing of the Ethical Pact for Good Politics at the Service of Reconciliation and Peace by the candidates for the Governorship of Cesar and Mayor of Valledupar, with a view to the elections on October 29.
The activity was part of the Peace Week programming carried out by the Catholic Church in the territory, and whose objective is to promote a policy of healthy coexistence and serious proposals to motivate future leaders to promote the development of communities and maintain the hope for a dignified life. The initiative was also endorsed by the National Conciliation Commission and the Ministry of the Interior.
The spaces of the Ecce Homo Cathedral in Valledupar were the setting, so that before God, the aspirants committed to carrying out a healthy campaign without aggression. Prior to signing the document, the candidates publicly announced that they agreed with the points presented and committed to fulfilling each of the agreed commitments.
The candidates Ernesto Orozco, María Isabel Campo, Lina De Armas, Ricardo Reyes, Ricardo Vives, Miguel Morales, and Zulibeth Dhagill attended the meeting, representing Cristian José Moreno Villamizar; those absent were Camilo Quiroz, Darling Guevara and Álvaro Portilla.
Elvia Milena Sanjuán, Kaleb Villalobos, Arturo Calderón, Claudia Margarita Zuleta, Surelys Pana, José Luis Mayorca, Alexandra Pineda and Antonio Sanguino attended for the Government of Cesar. Katia Ospino did not attend the signing of the great agreement.
Among the aspects stated in the Ethical Pact for Good Politics at the Service of Reconciliation and Peace, the commitment of each candidate to develop a responsible, fair and peaceful campaign full of respect for the other, framed within the principles of a democratic society, whose only goal is the common good of the inhabitants of the territory.
Be transparent regarding campaign proposals “committing that the end does not justify the means” and, therefore, rejecting all misleading propaganda.
If elected, they commit to honestly comply with the norms of the Colombian Social State of Law, to include in the government plan the demands and proposals raised by the communities and to work for the development of the territories to achieve peace.
AN ACT OF BRAVERY
Monsignor Oscar Velez Isaza, bishop of the Diocese of Valledupar, thanked the candidates for their attention to the Church’s proposal with the signing of this pact that seeks peace and dialogue in this society.
“I ask each of you to show greatness by making serious proposals for the benefit of a group. I invite you not to be carried away by the temptation that leads you to fall into error; show their greatness and urged them to maintain respect for the other candidates,” he assured.
Jesús Alberto Torres, director of the Diocesan Social Pastoral in Valledupar and who led the commitment act, stated that the Church expresses feelings of gratitude towards the candidates for the Governorship of Cesar and the Mayor of Valledupar, who showed themselves to be brave by signing this ethical pact. They are showing everyone the path to a new society, building peace and being together despite differences.
“We hope that the pact contributes to this political campaign and that the new president is committed to society,” he said.
IT’S A COMMITMENT
“We want to tell you that, in our campaign, in our own name we signed this pact with the conviction that we are going to comply with it. The campaigns that are in the political contest with us can rest assured, because we are loyal and it is with proposals that we are working for the Mayor of Valledupar, and although we have received attacks from many campaigns, we continue forward and in a government of Ernesto Orozco we all Our opponents will be welcome,” said Ernesto Orozco, candidate for Mayor of Valledupar.
Kaleb Villalobos, candidate for the Governor of Cesar, said for his part, “we celebrate these types of spaces. We believe that peace and reconciliation are internal, spiritual and emotional states, which also have to do with dignified living conditions and that by example one demonstrates whether one wants peace and reconciliation,” he stressed.
Elvia Milena Sanjuan, candidate for the Governorship, assured that a non-aggression pact and the reconstruction of territory in the sense of achieving peace have been signed. “We have come to tell the Catholic Church, the administrative and electoral authorities, that we join this initiative, we endorse that pact with commitment, responsibility and vocation.
A public servant committed to building peace must turn the page on hatred and resentment, contribute to the investment of resources to close inequality gaps and guarantee justice in the territory,” he stated.
