The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Mélanie Joly, travels to Mexico this Tuesday to meet with the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, and several future secretaries of her cabinet.
Joly, who will remain in Mexico until June 27, will hold meetings with Juan Ramón de la Fuente, who will occupy the position of Secretary of Foreign Affairs; Alicia Bárcena, current Secretary of Foreign Affairs and future Secretary of the Environment; as well as Marcelo Ebrard, appointed as the next Secretary of Economy by Sheinbaum.
The Canadian minister declared in a statement that she wants to meet with the Mexican president-elect and with key members of his cabinet to reiterate Canada’s commitment “to work with Mexico as a close strategic partner” of North America.
“I look forward to meeting with my colleagues in the next Mexican administration to explore how we can work together to deepen relations between Canada and Mexico and advance the common interests of the two countries in North America,” he added.
Joly’s trip to Mexico comes as Ottawa has not yet announced the date on which the North American leaders’ summit will be held that Canada has to organize this year.
Initially, the summit was scheduled to be held in April but Canada’s decision to impose entry visas on Mexicans and the difficult relations between the governments of Justin Trudeau and Andrés Manuel López Obrador caused the meeting to be delayed.
