Three teams have made their debut in this year’s T20 World Cup. USA and Uganda made history by winning. Another anointed team was Canada. They also made history by beating Ireland. They got their first victory in the Twenty Over World Cup by 12 runs even with a target of 138 runs on Friday.
Batting first at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, Canada lost four wickets for 53 runs in the ninth over. Of which two wickets were by Craig Young.
When Ireland were in a good position, Nicholas Carton and Shreyas Movva made them uncomfortable. Canada turned in a pair of 75 runs between the two, which is the record pair for the fifth wicket in the history of the country. Carton returned with 49 off 35 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes. Movva stopped with 37 runs on the last ball of the innings. He was run out in the last ball after playing this innings with 3 fours from 36 balls.
Canada scored 137 runs losing 7 wickets. Young and Barry McCarthy took two wickets each for Ireland.
Ireland did not get off to a bad start with a target of 138 runs. The opening pair broke for 26 runs in the last over of the power play. Paul Sterling returns for 9 runs. Then five more batters left the field one by one. They have 6 wickets for 59 runs in the 13th over.
Victory was then a matter of time for Canada. But George Dockrell and Mark Adair held firm. Both of them took out the boundary after understanding the ball, and continued to reduce the gap with single-doubles. The Irish were then in control of the match. It takes 36 runs in the last three overs. But when Dillon Heiliger gave only 8 runs in the 18th over, the Irish were under pressure again. Kalim Sana’s two fours in the penultimate over contributed to Adair’s 11 runs, but a tough target of 17 runs stood in the last over.
Jeremy Gordon let Ireland down with some brilliant bowling. Adair got out with a return catch to the bowler with four balls left in the innings. Ireland could not break the pair of 62 runs from 41 balls. Adair scored 34 runs off 3 fours and 1 six off 24 balls. Dockrell was unbeaten on 30 runs off 23 balls with 2 fours and a six. Ireland’s innings stopped at 125 runs for 7 wickets.
Heiliger and Gordon took two wickets each for Ireland. Carton became the man of the match.
Canada became the 22nd team to win the T20 World Cup. They climbed to third in the table with only one win in two matches. USA tops Group A after winning two matches.
The record of losing to the highest number of different opponents in T20 World Cup was in the possession of Bangladesh until now, now Ireland has shared it. Both teams have lost to 11 different opponents in the tournament.
