Canadian football coach Bev Priestman banned from Paris 2024 Olympics over ‘use of drones against opponents’

The head coach of Canada’s women’s Olympic soccer team has been fired over an alleged drone spying scandal. The Canadian Olympic Committee announced that Priestman has been banned by the Canadian Soccer Federation.

Assistant coach Andy Spence will now manage the team. Canadian Football Federation CEO Kevin Blue said Priestman was suspended after new information emerged about the use of drones against opponents ahead of Paris 2024.

The incident began when New Zealand claimed a drone was seen over their training facility. Police arrested “unaccredited analyst” Joseph Lombardi and questioned Priestman’s assistant Jasmine Mander. Lombardi pleaded guilty and received a fine and a suspended sentence.

While FIFA launched an investigation, Priestman issued a statement apologising and announcing his decision not to referee Thursday’s match.

Priestman has led Canada’s national team since 2020, when the team won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
