A campaign has been launched on Azerbaijan’s social networks for the final match between “Galatasaray” and “Fenerbagh” of the Turkish Super Cup, which should be held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Social media activists want the final match of the brotherly country to take place in Baku after the proposal of Sinan Ogan, a Turkish politician of Azerbaijani origin, to hold the game in Khankendi.
Publika.az It is reported that speaking to Prosport.Az about the issue, the head of the Press Service of AFFA, Elnur Mammadli, said that in the summer of this year, the former general secretary of the Turkish Football Federation contacted them about the Super Cup game.
“He said that in addition to Azerbaijan, there is also an option for Saudi Arabia. In general, how would you view it if the game is held in Azerbaijan?” Our answer was yes, of course. Financial issues were not discussed based on that conversation. The former general secretary of the Turkish Football Federation said on the basis of the conversation that there is still a long way to go, the match will be in January, and if necessary, we will contact you again. Negotiations with the Turkish side consisted only of this. After that, we were not contacted about this issue.”
E. Mammadli’s answer to the question about the possibility of reapplying was as follows:
“First of all, you need to look at the calendar of the clubs. In general, it is not yet known when this game will be held. Of course, all these issues should be discussed. The issue of Khankendi is a decision taken at the level of the country’s leadership.”
It should be noted that the said match was canceled yesterday. The reason for this is Saudi Arabia’s ban on both teams from playing the Atatürk banner, uniform and the National Anthem in connection with the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. After this ban, both teams made a unanimous decision and decided to return to Turkey. As a result, the Super Cup match in Saudi Arabia was cancelled.
