The rise in infections caused by the Omicron variant around the world continues to increase, despite the restrictions imposed by governments. Infections have reached exorbitant numbers in recent weeks due to this variant.

According to BBC Mundo, this variant continues to cause more infections than the delta variant.

Omicron, a highly contagious variant
Since its appearance, Omicron has been considered a highly contagious variant, given that the mutations it developed adhere more to human cells.

On the other hand, this variant can also re-infect people who were previously infected with Covid-19 and, finally, it is considered so contagious because it is located in the upper respiratory tract, compared to the delta variant, which is located in the lungs.

According to the UK Health Security Agency, Omicron is three times more contagious than other known variants.

Although it is not known whether infection with Omicron is more severe or fatal, some indicators suggest that it produces mild symptoms in people, reducing hospitalizations by 70% compared to Delta.

Do vaccines protect against omicron?
Experts have indicated that vaccines protect against severe symptoms of this variant. However, they do not work against contagion, meaning that immunized people can become infected with this virus.

For this reason, experts suggest having the complete vaccination schedule, since two doses of the vaccine provide 30 to 40% protection in the following three months.

Furthermore, with the reinforcement this protection increases by 75 to 80%.
