Mothers face various risks during pregnancy and childbirth. Childbirth with proper hospital care is very important to prevent maternal and infant mortality and to keep mother and child healthy. But due to lack of proper knowledge in rural areas, child birth is usually attempted at home without any health care. They don’t have proper knowledge about health checkup during pregnancy and hospital delivery. Religious bigotry also hampers hospital delivery.
The speakers said these things at a national-level knowledge exchange workshop organized by Midwaf on health service chiefs in the island area organized at a hotel in Gulshan 2 of the capital on Monday (March 25). Speakers in the event called for the government to take initiatives to provide services to mothers during pregnancy.
A midwife-based health care project is being conducted in the island region of the country as a joint project of the private development organization Partners in Health and Development (PHD) and Concern Worldwide. This project is implemented in Charfashan and Manpura upazilas of Bhola district. About 600 babies have been born in hospitals through this project through midwives.
Midwaf Iti Akhter has worked to encourage childbirth in hospitals by working at the field level in the island area and explaining in various ways. He said, it is very difficult to bring people to the hospital in rural areas. In-laws from the family do not want to agree. They want the wife to deliver at home.
He said midwives in the area are also a problem. They do not take care of a pregnant woman from the beginning. Only before the babies arrive are their families called. Besides, being an island area, it is not possible to cross the river and bring them to the hospital if the child is born late at night.
Speakers said that there are no midwives in the villages, even though there are posts in the government healthcare institutions. By taking proper initiative of the government, healthy child birth will be possible and the unborn child will also be healthy.
Additional Director General of Department of Health Professor Dr Ahmedul Kabir, Managing Director of PhD Abdus Salam along with officials of PhD and Concern Bangladesh were present in the event.
