Upazila Awami League has called a strike demanding the removal of Atgharia police station officer (OC) Hadiul Islam. A hartal has been called from 3 pm to 9 pm in Atgharia on Wednesday (June 12).
On Sunday (June 9), Atgharia Upazila Awami League President and Municipal Mayor Shahidul Islam Ratan announced the program.
Earlier, the leaders and activists protested against the case against the newly-elected Chairman of Atgharia Upazila Parishad, Tanveer Islam. The procession passed through Atgharia Bazar and passed in front of the police station on the main main road and ended at Bazar Junction. Meanwhile, the activists blocked the Pabna-Chatmohar road by burning tires. Leaders of Upazila Awami League addressed a short rally there.
Upazila Awami League President and Municipal Mayor Shahidul Islam Ratan, Upazila Awami League General Secretary and Deputy UP Chairman Mohaimin Hossain Chanchal and newly elected Upazila Chairman Tanvir Islam, Mazpara Union Awami League President Md. Intaj Ali Khan gave other speeches.
Upazila Awami League President and Municipal Mayor Shahidul Islam Ratan said, ‘Atghariar police station OC Hadiul Islam dagi has been dealing with terrorists. With his direct support, some terrorists are doing whatever they want in Atghariya. He doesn’t want to take any case if he doesn’t like it. Terrorists carry weapons with the OC. But he did not take any action against them. The people of Atghariya do not want this OC. A 6-hour hartal will be observed from 3 pm to 9 pm in Atgharia next Wednesday (June 12) to demand his removal.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Atgharia Police Station Hadiul Islam said, ‘My removal may be their political issue. If you can give me a clear reason why they want to remove me then I can tell you about it. I work in the chain of command. Therefore, I believe that I have followed the proper legal aspects of the work I have done. I am not influenced by anyone, I act according to my superior authority and the law.’
It is to be noted that on June 3, 5 supporters of the winning chairman Tanveer Islam were attacked by the supporters of the defeated chairman candidate in the Atgharia Upazila Parishad election in Pabna. Furniture of the upazila Awami League office and three motorcycles were vandalized. In this incident, a case was filed in the name of some people including Jewel, the supporter of the defeated candidate. After the case, on Saturday (June 8) based on the complaint given by the main accused Jewel, a case of vandalism of Jewel’s office on election day was filed in the name of newly elected chairman Tanveer Islam.
