Egypt – The Egyptian-European summit was launched yesterday, Sunday, in Cairo, to raise the level of relations to a “strategic and comprehensive partnership,” and to discuss the file of the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip in its sixth month.
The Egyptian Presidency broadcast, via its YouTube account, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s announcement of the start of the summit and the speeches of the participants.
Before the start of the summit, Sisi received, at the Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo, the President of the European Union Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of Belgium, President of the European Union, Alexander De Croo, according to a presidential statement.
Sisi also received the Prime Ministers of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, and the President of Greek Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.
According to the same source, Sisi held “separate bilateral meetings with each of the guests, during which he welcomed the elevation of relations between Egypt and the European Union to the level of a “strategic and comprehensive partnership,” and discussed with them enhancing cooperation in many fields.
The meetings also dealt with “the regional situation, especially the war in Gaza,” according to the presidential statement.
Al-Sisi stressed, “The international community must assume its responsibilities to push for an immediate ceasefire and bring aid in sufficient quantities into the Strip to protect it from the humanitarian catastrophe it is facing.”
He warned that “any military operations in the Palestinian city of Rafah will have serious repercussions on the security of the region as a whole,” according to the statement.
It is worth noting that many countries warned Israel against launching a military operation in Rafah, where there are more than 1.4 million Palestinians, according to international reports, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved plans for a possible military operation in the city.
On Friday, the official Egyptian News Agency quoted the Financial Times newspaper as saying that the European Union intends to “provide an aid package amounting to 7.4 billion euros (more than 8 billion dollars) to Egypt aimed at supporting its economy, and it is expected to be announced during von der Leyen’s visit to the country.” , Sunday”.
The value of the agreements signed by Egypt with the European Union amounted to $12.8 billion during the period (2020-2023), according to the agency.
