Burundi, before the Committee of 24 of the United Nations, reiterated its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, welcoming the autonomy initiative presented by the Kingdom in order to settle the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
During the regular session of the 24th Committee, held between June 10 and 21 in New York, the representative of Burundi noted the opening of consulates general for Arab, African, American and Asian countries, as well as regional organizations, in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla.
He pointed out that this dynamic aims to enhance the economic and social opportunities offered by the Moroccan Sahara, as it is a pole of development, stability and radiation within the spaces of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic Ocean and Africa.
In this context, he praised the level of social and economic development achieved thanks to the investments and projects implemented within the framework of the new development model launched by Morocco in 2015, which contributed significantly to empowering the population and improving human development indicators in the Moroccan Sahara.
On the other hand, the diplomat highlighted that his country welcomes the participation of the representatives of the Sahara, who were democratically re-elected during the vote on September 8, 2021, in the regional conferences of the 24th Committee, the last of which was held in Caracas between May 14 and 16, 2024, and in the two round tables in Geneva.
The representative of Burundi welcomed the efforts made by the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, aimed at facilitating the relaunch of the political process under the exclusive auspices of the UN Secretary-General, especially his visits to Rabat, Algiers and Nouakchott.
In this regard, he called for the resumption of the process of round table meetings as soon as possible, in the same format and with the same participants: Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and “Polisario”, in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2703, calling on these parties to continue engaging throughout the political process, with the hope of reaching To reach a realistic, practical, lasting and consensus-based political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with the request of the Security Council.
