Three works are being carried out by the Burundi Road Agency (ARB) as part of the project to rehabilitate, extend and modernize the Melchior Ndadaye international airport, namely; the development of an access track leading to the base life, the earthworks of land where the company’s life base will be built and the earthworks of land where the control tower will be built. This is published on the ARB Twitter account.

And to add: “The overall progress rate of the works is 50%”. The overall cost for these three works is 380,562,289 FBu and the duration of execution of this project is 36 months.

In the same vein, a team of technicians from the Chinese construction company SHANGHAI BOAYE GROUP CORP LMT responsible for rehabilitating the airport was welcomed by the general management of the Civil Aviation Authority of Burundi (AACB ).

Onatel is also working to extend its fiber optic technology along the Bujumbura road to the airport.

Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, the only national platform

Melchior Ndadaye International Airport is the only international airport in the country. Several companies serve the country via this airport including Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, Air Tanzania and Uganda Airlines. Flights vary depending on the days and companies.

In the report presented in February 2023, Gervais Ndirakobuca, Prime Minister of the Republic of Burundi, declared before the Parliament meeting in congress on the government’s own funds, the emergency work for the rehabilitation of the runways of the Melchior Ndadaye international airport were to begin shortly. This after having noted delays in the completion of certain projects following delays, delays or funding that did not come.

In January 2020, the government announced that it had just benefited from funding from a Chinese donation for the rehabilitation of the landing strip and control tower at Melchior Ndadaye international airport.

International airport construction projects awaiting completion

However, no one wonders what could happen if a problem like the overflowing of Lake Tanganyika occurs at the country’s only international airport. Never mind, a project to build a relay airport for the Melchior Ndadaye international airport in Bugendana was announced in 2016. This project has not yet started.

In addition, in 2017, the council of ministers also analyzed a construction project for the Kabamba international airport in the Gashikanwa commune of the Ngozi province.
