The authorized authorities call to protect the eucalyptus, a tree once mature, give hard boards. This was recommended on June 13, 2024 during the country-level celebration of World Environment Day in Mabanda in Makamba Province. The said authorities invited the population to use gas and peat in order to replace the coal often taken from young eucalyptus trees.
The celebration of World Environment Day was an opportunity to sow eucalyptus seeds in the germinator and prepare the nurseries at the Mushara site located on Musenyi hill in Mabanda commune of Makamba province.
According to Prosper Bazombanza, Vice President of the Republic of Burundi, the eucalyptus is a tree that ranks the country in global coverage. In addition, he insists, when the eucalyptus is protected until it reaches adulthood, it produces robust boards.
However, reminds Mr. Bazombanza, to have an adult eucalyptus, we must avoid cutting it down at a young age. And adds: “However, eucalyptus does not coexist with plants. This is why they must be planted on the mountains” before recalling that planting agro-forestry and fruit trees in the fields is necessary to protect the soil against erosion. From these agro-forestry trees, fodder for livestock can also be obtained.
Prepared sprouter and nurseries
The celebration of World Environment Day was an opportunity to sow eucalyptus seeds in the germinator and prepare the nurseries at the Mushara site located on Musenyi hill in Mabanda commune in Makamba province.
“From the prepared nurseries, 160 thousand eucalyptus plants will be collected to be transplanted over 100 hectares. This will take place next December,” notes the Vice-President of the Republic of Burundi before declaring that the citizen who needs eucalyptus plants to transplant will receive them free of charge.
However, the contents of the sprouter and nurseries require watering. The use of pesticides to protect plants against insects and the use of urea to facilitate the development of plants as well as the use of shading to protect plants against the sun and rain are necessary.
Replace the use of charcoal with gas and peat
Mr. Bazombanza deplores the fact that people are cutting down young eucalyptus trees to make charcoal. However, he insists, people must get used to replacing charcoal with gas and peat.
And to point out: “The use of gas is less expensive than the use of charcoal”.
The Vice-President of the Republic of Burundi also invites those who use eucalyptus boards in the construction of multi-storey houses to use scaffolding instead.
On behalf of development partners, Francesco Mancini announced that the United Nations will increase support in the environmental protection sector.
