Burundi Eco ANAGESSA launches corn collection campaign – 2024-02-19 11:27:46

Each year, the National Agency for Strategic Food Stock Management (ANAGESSA) collects cereal harvests to ensure storage and marketing. Since Monday, February 19, 2024, the national corn grain collection campaign has been underway. Flashback on the failures of the harvest management policy and certain corrective measures taken.

ANAGESSA will collect the corn harvest.

Since February 19, 2024, the National Agency for Strategic Food Stock Management (ANAGESSA) will collect the corn harvest, this was announced by Ms. Marie Chantal Nijimbere, Minister of Trade, Transport, Industry and Tourism in a lively press briefing on Wednesday February 14, 2023. The minister announced that this year, a kg of corn grains costs 1,700 FBu. A price set to support the efforts made by farmers in purchasing seeds and fertilizers.

Conditions imposed on large producers

Thus, to avoid speculation by traders, who could get involved in this process in order to sell corn grains that do not come from their harvest, protective measures have been taken. A farmer who wants to sell a harvest of 500kg or more must prove that it is his corn harvest.

Thus, to justify the seller must bring all the fertilizer purchase vouchers given that to produce such a quantity, the purchase of fertilizer requires a special exemption. For those who have fertilized with organic manure, they must have a document of recognition duly signed by the chief of the hill where the farmer resides.

Minister Nijimbere ranks the administrative officials who will try to endorse the fraudsters. “ A careful investigation down to field level for those who will sell a surplus crop to find out if exactly they have sold their own crop “, she clarified. And to add: “the administrative authorities who disregard these measures and who conspire with traders will be punished in accordance with the law ».

A project that accumulates failures

This is not the first time that the government has interfered in the regulation of non-strategic prices. Since its creation in 2019, this project has suffered several failures. Preserving food is a problem. It was noted that there were insufficient hangars and a lack of inventory monitoring. This caused the rotting of a large part of corn stocks in 2022.

In terms of prices, this agency has only worsened the situation while the growth in production should normally be followed by the fall in prices on the market, we are witnessing volatility in cereal prices.

Alternatives…

To overcome these challenges, Martin Niteretse, Minister of the Interior, Community Development and Public Security, invite the administrative authorities to request hangars in all country areas and to monitor stocks in order to avoid the preserved harvest is rotten. It was during the organizational meeting of this corn harvest collection campaign with all the provincial governors this Thursday, February 25, 2024.

As a reminder, ANAGESSA’s mission is to find solutions to harvest management problems. This is to guarantee a physical food reserve as part of the fight against food shortages.
