JAKARTA – The British Embassy in Jakarta condemns the violence that has occurred in several areas of the UK.

The British Embassy emphasized that Indonesian citizens need not worry and will continue to be warmly welcomed in the UK.
“Regarding the violence and disorder that has occurred in a small number of locations in the UK, on behalf of the British Government, I want to publicly condemn this senseless thuggery and hooliganism, carried out by a small group,” said Deputy British Ambassador to Indonesia Matthew Downing in the latest statement on Tuesday (6/8/2024).

He explained, “I also want to reassure the Indonesian people that people visiting the UK are still warmly welcomed.”

Downing said: “Britain is a tolerant, open and multicultural country and what you witnessed does not represent British values.”

“The UK government has been clear that we, as a country, will not tolerate attacks on mosques, Muslim communities or anyone because of their religion or the colour of their skin,” he said.

He stressed, “The criminals who committed these acts, and those who incite hatred and disinformation online, will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

Downing said, “As we mark 75 years of our diplomatic relations this year, the UK’s friendship with Indonesia will continue to grow.”

“I believe we can strengthen and develop political, cultural, educational, trade and investment relations between the two countries,” he concluded.
