Brazil annuls proceedings against Marcelo Odebrecht in the Lava Jato case

According to the resolution, the accusations and proceedings against Marcelo do not affect Peruvian justice.

The Justice of Brazil has decided to drop all criminal charges against Marcelo Odebrecht, the former CEO of the construction company Odebrechtlinked to the caso Lava Jato.

This measure was ratified by the substitute judge Guilherme Roman Borge of the 13th Court of Curitibaand follows the resolution of Supreme Court Judge José Antonio Dias Toffoli, who had already ordered the filing of these proceedings in May.

Does Brazilian justice affect Peruvian justice?

The cancellation of these proceedings is limited to Brazil and does not directly affect Peru. Marcelo Odebrecht He is not facing charges nor is he included in the effective collaboration agreement signed between the Brazilian construction company and the Special Team of Prosecutors in the Lava Jato case in Peru.

However, this Brazilian decision could influence the evidence shared with Peruvian prosecutors and the participation of Brazilian officials in the hearings of the trials in Peru related to the Lava Jato case.

Judge Dias Toffoli annulled the proceedings, considering that “unorthodox and illegal” practices were carried out during the investigations by former judge Sergio Moro and the Task Force. This annulment also affects the international collaboration processes between Brazil and other countries, including Peru, related to Marcelo Odebrecht.
