To position the dramatic voice of women of the 20th century, making their creation visible and contributing to the Chilean and Latin American theatre scene. This was the objective set by the members of the Research and Creation Centre for Scenic Arts (NICE), made up of creators Patricia Artés Ibáñez, Lorena Saavedra González and Maritza Farías Cerpa.
And they achieved this by developing an investigation, which was published in the book Evidencias, las otras dramaturgias in 2020 and a documentary of the same name in 2023. On this occasion, NICE Núcleo brings a new contribution to the field of local stage research with a second volume of the book, also published by Ediciones Oxímoron.
“In Evidencias 2, five of the ten works anthologized belong to new playwrights, since the other five were also considered in Evidencias 1. The playwrights Elvira Santa Cruz, Gloria Cordero, Tania Báez, Malucha Pinto, Paulina Hunt and Coca Duarte are part of this edition. We are very happy with this new volume since it has been a years-long investigation in which we found a lot of material to share and that has had different output formats with very good reception, as happened with volume 1 and the documentary,” describe the researchers about this new edition.
In the dramaturgies of this second volume of Evidencias, they detail, impositions established by the State, the family and particularly by the church, marriage, and schools emerge, all protected by a patriarchal system that has among its aims to keep women confined to the private sphere and put them at the service of the system and of men. Oppressions not only in the realm of couple relationships, but also exceed the intimate to establish themselves as structures that have articulated ways of life.
“The institutions mentioned, State and family, led us to select the works for this second volume, a question that is based on the possibility of analysis that these works can offer given their argumentative potential and character development. It is within this framework that ten dramatic pieces were selected and shared with you,” the researchers point out.
Thus, the works that make up the second volume are: The Busquillas Family by Elvira Santa Cruz (1918), Unfounded Pride by Rosa Idilia Cabrera (1926), Nina by Gloria Moreno (1935), Hot Bread by María Asunción Requena (1967), Onion Cloth by Gloria Cordero (1972), Yumbel Altarpiece by Isidora Aguirre (1986), Thalamus by Inés Stranger (1996), The Discovered Girl by Tania Báez (1998), The Great Landing of the Mambo Queens by Malucha Pinto and Paulina Hunt (2000) and Joan of Arc. The Mystery of Light by Coca Duarte (2000).
The first volume of the book contains twelve texts: Defeated Feelings by Luisa Zanelli (1919); Melchorite by Rose Idilia Cabrera (1924); Sea by Glory Moreno (1936); Dishonor by Anna Ayala (1941); Camps by Dinka Ilic (1955); The Spider’s Web by Gabriela Roepke (1958); The Longest Road by Mary Assumption Requena (1959); Who Was to Blame for the Death of Maria Gonzalez? by Isidore Aguirre (1969); Bad Love by Ines Stranger (1990); Never Forget That It’s Not Your House by Lucia de la Mace (1997); By Order of Oblivion by Ximena Carrera (2000) and Voices in the Mud by Monica Perez (2000).
“For us as a publisher, it is essential to publish this second volume of Evidencias. After the great reception that the first one had, this second one corresponds to the need of readers who were left wanting more. The depth of analysis and the selection that NICE made, once again acquires relevance for the history of Chilean dramaturgy,” they add from Ediciones Oxímoron.
