SURABAYAParis 2024 Olympics is underway. Sports fans around the world must be wondering how much prize money athletes get when they win medals at this prestigious quadrennial sporting event.

According to a BuzzFeed report, Tuesday (7/30/2024), every athlete who wins a gold, silver, and bronze medal does not guarantee additional prizes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not provide prize money, so it is up to the athlete’s country of origin.

In lieu of prize money, the IOC distributes 90 percent of its revenues through national Olympic committees and international federations. “This means that, every day, the equivalent of USD4.2 million is used to help athletes and sports organizations at all levels around the world. It is up to each IF and NOC to determine how best to serve their athletes and the global development of their sport.”

The 2024 Paris Olympics are known to be attended by 206 countries. But only 33 have confirmed that they will give money to athletes for winning medals.

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, for example, will pay medal winners about $37,500 for gold, $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze. Paralympic medalists weren’t paid equally until 2018, when the committee gave retroactive payments to 36 medal winners from the Pyeongchang games.

Singapore offers six-figure sums to medalists based on the sport they win. Gold medalists get $1 million for individual events, $1.5 million for team events and $2 million for team sports.

However, winners must set aside 20 percent of their prize money for development and training. Reportedly, 15 countries give six-figure prizes to gold medal winners.
