Bombs, stones and splinters; see photos of the coup attempt in Brasilia

Next Monday (8) marks one year since a historic moment for Brazil: the coup attempt carried out in Brasilia at the beginning of 2023. On that occasion, the protesters who called for the intervention of the Armed Forces against the government of democratically elected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), invaded the headquarters of the Three Powers.

The coup attempt failed, with Bolsonaro supporters arrested and thousands of cases opened before Brazilian justice. A year later, the judiciary is still trying those accused of acting against the democratic rule of law. Investigations into financiers and intellectual authors also continue.

The National Congress is expected to organize an event on Monday (8) to commemorate the date. The presidents of the Three Powers will participate in the event: Lula, as President of the Republic, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, as President of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), as of president of the Congress. They must reinforce the message that democracy remains strong in Brazil.

The union of the Three Powers was also achieved the day after January 8, with a “Note in defense of democracy”, signed by representatives of each institution. At the time the buildings were still destroyed, the authorities were still dealing with the consequences of the coup attempt and the images left by those acts.

The opposition senators in the Senate, however, released a joint note criticizing the holding of the event. They also criticize the coup investigations conducted by the STF.

“In this way we underline that it is necessary to urgently stop the practice of exceptional acts by a power with the justification of protecting democracy,” reads the note signed by 30 senators. “The abuse of power and the abuse of interpretations of constitutional provisions can kill democracy. The return to democratic normality can no longer wait.”

The signatory senators are part of the following parties: PL, PP, Republicans, Novo, PSDB, Podemos, União Brasil and PSD. Read the full document here.

Coup attempt

See below the timeline and photos of the attempted coup in Brasilia:

On the afternoon of January 8, 2023, a group of Bolsonaristas camped at the army headquarters in Brasilia left the camp and headed towards Praça dos Três Poderes. With ease, the group invaded and vandalized the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Federal Supreme Court.

The attacks were the trigger of a movement that contested and sought to delegitimize the result of the 2022 elections, which anointed Lula President of the Republic for the third time since the beginning of the 2000s.

The PT MP’s victory at the polls left some of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) supporters dissatisfied. As a result, many went to army barracks to demand military intervention in Brazil. The unconstitutional provision had no effect and the Bolsonarists began to camp in the barracks, asking for the intervention of the Armed Forces.

Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party even attempted to invalidate the votes that gave Lula victory in the second round of the elections. The attempt, however, had no effect. The Bolsonarists’ actions continued and had their first major increase in violence on December 12, 2022, with an attempt to invade the PF headquarters. The date marked Lula’s graduation as the next President of the Republic.

Another spike in violence related to the contestation of the election result occurred on December 24, 2022. On Christmas Eve, authorities stopped the attempted bombing at Brasilia airport.

Bolsonaro’s camps continued in front of the barracks, especially in Brasilia. However, Lula’s presidential inauguration took place in complete safety and tranquility.

With a demonstration scheduled for January 8, the previous days had been marked by the arrival of buses carrying Bolsonarists from several Brazilian states. On social media, the events were dubbed the “Selma Party” and pointed to the Esplanada dos Ministérios as the hub of the demonstration.

On January 8, posters called for the intervention of the Armed Forces. In the early afternoon the Bolsonarists head towards Praça dos Três Poderes. Up to a point they were escorted by Brasilia police – peaceful demonstrations were allowed – but faced little resistance as the violence escalated.

The National Congress was the first to be invaded. The exterior of the historic building is vandalized first. The coup plotters arrive at the Senate chamber and occupy it. At the same time, part of the crowd occupies the facade.

Next it was the turn of the Palácio do Planalto. President Lula was not present on site, nor at the Palácio do Alvorada, his official residence. I went to Sao Paulo to follow the actions of the Civil Protection due to the rains. Despite this, the Bolsonarists invaded Planalto and vandalized it, just as was done to the Congress.

The last building to be invaded was the STF headquarters. Preferential target of the Bolsonarists, the Supreme Court was vandalized by hundreds of people, with the destruction of the plenary hall and the offices of the ministers, mainly Alexandre de Moraes.

It is after the STF invasion that the protesters are arrested by the Military Police of the Federal District. President Lula also decrees federal intervention in the country’s capital.
