Bolsonaro benefited from a “false” anti-Covid vaccine certificate

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro benefited from a “fake” vaccination certificate against Covid-19, an investigation by Brazil’s Office of the Comptroller General revealed on Thursday, which however recommended closing the case.

In his investigation, the Brazilian comptroller highlights inconsistencies between documents from the Brazilian Ministry of Health and Bolsonaro’s vaccination booklet, which indicates that the former head of state was administered a dose of Covid vaccine in Sao Paulo in July 2022.

Thus, “as regards the vaccination carried out in Sao Paulo – the only document that appears in the vaccination booklet of the former president – (…) the conclusion is that it is a fraud on the vaccination registration system against the Covid-19″, reads a note from the supervisory body.

The investigation therefore concludes that the Covid vaccination certificate from which Mr Bolsonaro received is “false”.

However, it recommends closing the case “due to lack of sufficient evidence” to identify those responsible, after noting that several officials could enter false data by having access to the vaccination computer system.

This investigation specifically aimed to determine whether federal officials had falsified Bolsonaro’s vaccination record.

During his mandate (2019-2022), the far-right leader continued to criticize anti-Covid vaccines, assuring that he had no intention of immunizing himself against the pandemic that has caused more than 700,000 deaths in Brazil. He later admitted that he had not been vaccinated.
