Boezem level rising, drainage options limited

Wednesday 3 January 2024, 2.25pm

LEEUWARDEN – Due to heavy rains in recent days, the water level in the Friesland reservoir and polders has risen significantly. High water causes more and more inconveniences.

Wetterskip Fryslân says they are working hard to prevent problems. “We use sandbags and pumps locally to prevent problems and store as much water as possible in the polders. In all measures to be taken, the priority is to protect homes and commercial buildings.”

The breast level is still rising

In the Frisian Basin – the province’s connected system of lakes, canals and canals – the average water level was 35 centimeters below the NAP this Wednesday morning. This is much higher than the target level of 52 centimeters -NAP.

“The water level is expected to rise further until Saturday, despite our efforts to drain as much water as possible towards the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. Further precipitation is expected on Friday and the ground will be saturated with water. ” according to the Wetterskip.

Limited drainage options

Due to the high water level in the Wadden Sea, drainage possibilities across the Lauwersmeer are still very limited until Thursday afternoon. Pumping stations along the coast, including the Woudagemaal in Lemmer, are working at full capacity to pump water.

Water storage in polders

“To relieve the pressure on the reservoir, we store as much water as possible in the polders of our management area. This means that the water level here will be increased to the maximum in the next few days. Here and there, parts of meadows will be temporarily flooded.”

A decision will be made on Thursday on the use of the 14 conservation polders that Wetterskip Fryslân has in reserve. A maximum of 6 million cubic meters of water can be temporarily stored here.

Woudagemaal open until Friday

The public who would like to visit the rotating Woudagemaal are welcome here until Friday, from 10:00 to 16:00. All tickets for today and Thursday are sold out. Tickets for Friday can be booked via the ticket system.
