The boat was heading to Yemen from the Horn of Africa. The International Organization for Migration confirmed this information on Tuesday (June 11).
There were 260 passengers on the boat that sank on Monday. Most of them are citizens of Ethiopia and Somalia. The boat started off the northern coast of Somalia.
Refugees from the Horn of Africa and East Africa are using Yemen as a route to reach Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries. Recently, the use of the risky route has increased significantly.
IOM said in a statement that 71 people were rescued from there. Eight of them have been sent to hospital. Besides, six children and 31 women are among the dead.
In April, 62 people were killed in such an accident off the coast of Djibouti en route to Yemen.
