The four young people found unconscious inside a BMW on the morning of January 1st in Balneário Camboriú, on the north coast, he died of asphyxiation from carbon monoxide. The information was confirmed in a press conference with the security forces of Santa Catarina this Friday (12).

Suspicion of poisoning by the odorless and highly toxic substance already exists had been raised during the investigation. During the investigations, the reports revealed that the gas leaked through the vehicle’s air conditioning system, which had undergone at least three customizations.

According to witnesses interviewed by the Criminal Investigation Department (DIC), before the group arrived at Balneário Camboriú for the city’s New Year’s Eve party, Ribeiro was driving the car and told family members that he heard “suffocation” in the car. However, they continued with the party.

Since the beginning of the investigation, another 15 investigations have been carried out on the bodies, the car and the place where the group was found. According to Andressa Boer Fronza, general expert of the Scientific Police, reports confirmed a large amount of carbon monoxide in the victims’ bloodas well as signs of asphyxiation and other features on the bodies.

“From the report produced by the Scientific Police experts it emerged that the cause of death of the four victims was asphyxiation from carbon monoxide, deriving from irregular alterations to the vehicle’s exhaust system, as explained in detail”, he explained.

The expert also underlined that no illicit substances were found inside the vehicle. Furthermore, the driver of the BMW had no alcohol in his blood.

As well as clarifying the death of the group, the Civil Police also concluded that no calls for help had been made on the victims’ cell phones hours before the group’s death. The information contradicts what a witness told police. Initially, he claimed that the deceased teenager called the Emergency and Emergency Service (Samu) and asked for help during the early hours of the morning.

“Delegate Vicente analyzed the calls, there was no call from within those young people, from the phones of those young people who were there in that period,” the general delegate, Ulisses Gabriel, said in a press conference.

What is known about the case

  • The case occurred on January 1, 2024. The group was found unconscious by the girlfriend of one of the victims, who remained in the car for a few moments;

  • The four young people spent about four hours in the car racing with the air conditioning on;
  • In the early hours of the morning, they reported eating a hot dog on the beach and linking nausea, dizziness and tremors to the food. The group remained at the bus station waiting for an improvement to be able to continue the journey;
  • The woman who arrived from the trip did not present any symptoms.
