A customization of the exhaust pipe of the BMW where the four young people killed in Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina, were located, may have caused carbon monoxide poisoning of the victims. This is the main suspect of the Civil Police of Santa Catarina.
The young people, aged 16, 19, 21 and 24, are miners from Paracatu, in the west of Minas Gerais, and were found inside the vehicle, in the car park of the city’s bus station, which is located on the north coast of the state of Santa Catarina, Monday morning fair (1/1).
“According to family members, the vehicle was customized in the exhaust pipe. Let’s try to make this connection to establish whether the cause of death was perhaps due to the customization of the vehicle which took place a few days ago. The IML has already ruled out the possibility of violence,” she explained.
It was a fifth person, who was on board the vehicle and would be the girlfriend of one of them, who called the firefighters and the police, asking for help. “From initial information it appears that a leak occurred between the engine and the panel of the vehicle, which caused intoxication and asphyxiation of the victims who were on board the car. A death caused by a defect,” the delegate said.
In her deposition, the surviving woman stated that she went from Paracatu to Balneário Camboriú, by bus, to meet her friends and her boyfriend. The group of students had moved to Florianópolis in December.
They decided to spend New Year’s Eve together, meeting at Balneário Camboriú. She disembarked about two hours earlier and waited for her friends. When they got to the car, the group complained of vomiting and dizziness. They remained in the vehicle for approximately four hours with the air conditioning on.
The surviving woman left and returned to the car, which may have reduced her intoxication.
Firefighters arrived with the victims unloaded from the vehicle and onto the street. They attempted to resuscitate the group for approximately 40 minutes and, when there was no response to the procedures, they were declared dead.
