“The potential for rain with moderate to heavy intensity, accompanied by lightning and strong winds in parts of Indonesia until April 11, is predicted,” said Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati during a virtual press conference, Thursday (4/4 /2024).
Dwikorita said that the potential for rain was caused by three phenomena, namely the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) which had entered Indonesian territory. MJO is a collection of rain clouds moving in procession from the east of Africa in the Indian Ocean along the equator, across the Indonesian archipelago towards the Pacific Ocean.
“And now it has started to come in, according to the results of detection and predictions a few days earlier or a week before, now this procession of rain clouds has really come to Indonesian territory, especially in the western region, yes. And later it will move continue towards the center and finally east,” he said.
Second, said Dwikorita, there are atmospheric wave phenomena, namely equatorial Kelvin and Rossby waves, as well as warm water surface temperatures in the Indonesian Archipelago. “This phenomenon plays an important role in increasing the formation of rain clouds in the Indonesian Archipelago,” he said.
Furthermore, said Dwikorita, early this morning the BMKG detected the emergence of a new Tropical Cyclone Seed, namely Cyclone Seed 96S which appeared around the Savu Sea, currently at a position of 10.2 degrees South Latitude and 121 degrees East Longitude. “So this is indeed what was just detected this morning, early morning,” he said.
Dwikorita said BMKG detected a weather variant that occurred from April 4 to 11. Where from April 4 to 7 a number of areas experienced strong winds, high waves, as well as lightning and lightning.
“In the lead up to April 11, there will be variations, from April 4 to 7, strong winds, high waves, lightning, lightning are predicted to occur in West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, Bangka Belitung Islands, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Java. Central, Special Region of Yogyakarta, East Java,” said Dwikorita.
Then, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan and South Kalimantan. Then, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi. Then North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua and Papua.
Next, said Dwikorita, for April 8 to 11 in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, Bangka Belitung Islands, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, several sub-districts in East Java, several sub-districts in Bali, in Nusa West Southeast, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, several sub-districts in Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, several sub-districts in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast, also several sub-districts in North Maluku , Maluku, West Papua and Papua.
“The province is read in general terms, but in Aceh it doesn’t mean that all of Aceh experiences heavy rain, so don’t be surprised if there is Aceh that doesn’t experience heavy rain. It’s normal because the rain is predicted at the sub-district level. So there are sub-districts that experience heavy rain but there are others that don’t but in general,” he said.
