BMDC heard the statements of Ayan’s father and accused 2 doctors – 2024-02-15 09:40:53

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) heard the statements of the two doctors and Ayan’s father Shamim Ahmed, who were accused in the death of baby Ayan while undergoing circumcision at the United Medical College Hospital. The two accused doctors are Dr. Tasnuba Mehzabin and Dr. Saeed Sabbir

The Disciplinary Committee of BMDC heard their statements directly on Wednesday (February 14) around 2 pm.

After the hearing, Ayaan’s father Shamim Ahmed told reporters that more than a month has passed since the incident. No progress yet. Doubts about getting justice. In addition, all the accused are walking around openly, far from arresting anyone. No one was arrested including the hospital director.

Shamim Ahmed said, I applied to BMDC to cancel the registration of the two accused doctors. BMDC called to hear details of the incident. We have given the details. We demand that those involved in the incident be brought under the law, including the cancellation of the certificates of these two doctors.

Ayaan’s father Shamim Ahmed alleged that he was being threatened after the case. He said, I have reached such a stage that I cannot stay at home properly. They go home and threaten. Now we are homeless.

Ayan’s father also questioned the role of the police. He said, I doubt whether I will get a fair trial or not.

In this context, BMDC disciplinary committee chairman Dr. Md. Ihteshamul Haque Chowdhury said, I have heard the statements of Ayan’s father and those doctors. Now we need some more documents from the hospital. And it is necessary to know the opinion of experts on related matters. We will give our decision together with the opinion, the documents of the concerned hospital and the statement of the complainant and two doctors. However, there is no specific date as to how long it may take.

When asked whether the certificates of the two accused doctors will be suspended or not, he said, we will make arrangements according to the scope of our work and capacity. And the two doctors accused who said? To us (BMDC) they are not accused yet. Our process is still ongoing. It may be charged elsewhere, we don’t know.

On December 31, 2023, Ayan was brought to United Medical College Hospital, Badda Swimming Pool, for circumcision. He was unconscious at 9 am that day. After that, when he did not regain consciousness even at 11 o’clock, he was brought to the United Hospital in Gulshan and kept on life support. On the night of January 7, the doctors opened life support and declared Ayan dead.

Ayaan’s family alleged that the doctors were supposed to perform the circumcision in partial unconsciousness, but Ayaan was completely unconscious. On the other hand, the death certificate issued by the United Hospital authorities said that the cause of death of Ayan was cardio-respiratory failure, multiorgan failure and cardiac arrest.
