Blessed Mexico, so close to God and not so far from the US

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, led the ceremony for the 110th anniversary of the patriotic defense of the Port of Veracruz, deployed on April 21, 1914 at the hands of Lieutenant José Azueta and cadet Virgilio Uribe along with the support of the people of Veracruz. .

From the heroic naval military school, President López Obrador took advantage of the historic date to express the desire that between Mexico and the United States “a policy of good neighborliness be maintained” in which clear rules and mutual respect prevail.

López Obrador recognized that North America is currently going through a very strong integration process with, for example, 40 million Mexicans living and working in the United States; In addition, Mexico became the first trading partner of the American Union, displacing China and Canada in that area.

López Obrador said that he is convinced that such integration is convenient for our country because it brings benefits such as less unemployment.

“A lot of investment is being received from the United States; This integration is convenient for us, there is no doubt about it because that foreign and public investment is what reactivates the economy and creates jobs,” the president highlighted in his speech.

For integration between the United States and Mexico to be strengthened, it is necessary – in the president’s opinion – to recognize that our country is neither a protectorate nor a colony.

“Strengthen North America and then the rest of the American continent (…) this is how we must integrate into America, that is what is best for the new generations, but a pact is needed, an agreement of mutual respect for our sovereignties; clear rules because Mexico does not want to be a protectorate or a colony of any foreign country; Mexico wants to continue being a free, sovereign country,” he stressed before governors, commanders of the armed forces and members of the cabinet who attended the ceremony as guests.

In the interests of this integration, López Obrador recalled that on several occasions he has told President Joe Biden “Blessed Mexico, so close to God and not so far from the United States.”

In the ceremony in which more than 250 cadets from the Heroic Naval Military School swore the flag, the president also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the Secretary of the Navy, Admiral José Rafael Ojeda Durán.

He maintained that it was a “good decision” to appoint him as Secretary of the Navy.

He appreciated their loyalty and dedication to responsibility.

“It was a good decision I made to appoint him as Secretary of the Navy; “He has risen to the occasion, just like the secretary of defense, the two institutions that are pilates of the state,” the president added.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the president took the oath of flag to the future officers of the Mexican Navy belonging to the 2023-2027 generation; At the same time, first-year swords were awarded to the most outstanding cadets.
