Concerns about US President Joe Biden’s age and suitability for office have been voiced before by many Americans.
To say that his debate with Donald Trump failed to assuage these concerns would be a serious understatement.
Biden didn’t need to deliver a big performance in the televised debate, but he fell short of expectations, slurring his sentences and making some of his remarks sound incoherent.
As the debate continued, Biden campaign executives told reporters that the president was battling a cold, which is why his voice was raspy.
But this sounded more like an excuse.
Throughout the 90-minute debate, Joe Biden appeared very fragile.
Some of his answers were ridiculous, especially at the beginning of the broadcast.
At one point, he fumbled with what he was going to say and concluded by saying, “We finally beat Medicare,” making an odd reference to the government’s health program for the elderly.
After this debate, many more people will talk about Biden’s performance compared to former president Trump.
One reason Biden’s campaign team wants a TV debate so early is that it could give them more time to recover from a potential poor performance.
What happened this Thursday evening may be a consolation.
The Democratic Party will hold its congress in August where the vision for Biden’s second term will be presented.
Another debate is planned for September, and if it happens, it will be clearer for Americans to decide when they go to the polls in November.
However, many Democrats may have doubts about how Biden will perform differently in this second debate.
And some are considering the possibility of whether they could field a different presidential candidate at this point.
‘Biden will win this election’
Biden’s campaign has nearly two months to calm the waters.
Biden, who has secured the necessary delegate majority, could be thwarted in his candidacy by an outright rebellion within the Democratic Party.
Although Democratic Party officials have signaled a state of alarm in anonymous interviews, they have not publicly broken ranks, at least so far.
Quentin Fulks, one of the election campaign managers, answered the BBC’s question about the possibility of someone else running instead of Biden by saying, “We will not legitimize this question by answering it.”
“President Biden will be the Democratic nominee and will win this election,” Fulks added.
But after last night’s debate, many Democrats may have serious doubts about their November prospects.
