Biden points out at the UN that no country will be safe if Ukraine loses the war

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, pointed out this Tuesday before the UN General Assembly that no country will have its independence assured if Ukraine loses the war due to the Russian invasion.

The president claimed the need to continue supporting the kyiv Government militarily to defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine and “dissuade” Russia from invading other countries in the future.

“If we abandon the basic principles of the United Nations Charter, can any member state feel safe? If we allow the division of Ukraine, will the independence of any nation be assured? The answer is no,” she warned.

For this reason, Biden promised that the United States and its allies “will continue to stand by the brave Ukrainian people in defense of their sovereignty, their territorial integrity and their freedom,” after which he received applause from the audience.

The president, who on this occasion did not refer directly to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, also pointed out that Russia is “responsible for this war” and that it is in its hands to end the conflict “immediately.”

Lula points to the war in Ukraine as proof of the “incapacity” of the UN

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated this Tuesday before the UN General Assembly that the war in Ukraine is proof of the “incapacity” of that organization and of the international community, which bets more on weapons than on peace.

“There will be no prosperity without peace,” because “armed conflicts are a challenge to humanity” and promoting “a culture of peace is everyone’s obligation,” but “not everyone assumes it,” declared Lula, who insisted on the need to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table.

“It is disturbing that there are old unresolved disputes and that new threats are emerging,” declared Lula, who also cited the many conflicts that persist in the Middle East, Africa and other regions of the world.

The war in Ukraine, according to Lula, “denounces our collective inability to enforce the principles of the UN,” which he urged to understand that “no solution will be lasting if it is not supported by dialogue.”

He criticized that the richest nations “invest a lot in weapons and little in development” and condemned “unilateral sanctions,” which “only bring serious harm to the affected countries.”
Petro calls for peace conferences

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, questioned this Tuesday before the UN General Assembly “the difference between Ukraine and Palestine” and proposed that the UN convene two peace conferences as a model to end “these wars and others.”

“I propose that you end the war to have time to save us, I propose that the United Nations sponsor two peace conferences as soon as possible, one on Ukraine, the other on Palestine,” Petro said in his speech.

According to the president, in this way “they would teach how to make peace in all regions of the planet, because both and only both would put an end to hypocrisy as a political practice, because we could be sincere.”

“We have dedicated ourselves to war, we have been called to war, Latin America has been called to deliver war machines, men to go to the combat fields; “They forgot that our countries were invaded several times by the same people who now talk about fighting against invasions,” criticized the Colombian head of state.

Along these lines, he added that “they forgot that the same reasons that are expressed to defend (the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr) Zelensky are the same reasons that should be defended Palestine.”

“I propose to end the war to defend life from the climate crisis, the mother of all crises,” continued Petro, who stated that the sustainable development goals established for 2030 “are not going to be achieved.”

Cuba repudiates US sanctions

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, criticized this Tuesday the “unilateral” and “coercive” measures of the United States against seven countries – including the island – without mentioning Russia, an ally sanctioned by the war in Ukraine.

During his speech before the United Nations General Assembly, the president harshly attacked the pressures from the United States to “isolate and economically weaken sovereign States.”

“(The measures) today also affect Venezuela, Nicaragua and, before and after, they have been the prelude to invasions and (the) overthrow of uncomfortable governments in the Middle East. We reject the coercive and unilateral measures imposed on countries such as Zimbabwe, Syria, the Democratic Republic of Korea and Iran, among many other countries whose people suffer the negative impact of these,” said Díaz-Canel.
