Bicycles for rent have disappeared from the streets of Almaty

The Almaty bike bicycle rental system will soon resume operation in the southern capital, Liter.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Almaty Akimat.

It is reported that a competition is currently being held to maintain an automated bicycle rental system for a social project for 2024.

“Upon completion of the competitive procedures and after the selection of the winner, bicycle rental will be available again. The system currently has 185 registered bike stations that can accommodate up to 950 bikes. The service provider is required to ensure the operation of all stations and bicycles,” the akimat assured.

Currently, the akimat has 1,460 bicycles on its balance sheet, of which more than 800 were actively used at the end of the last season in 2023. However, plans to purchase new bicycles or relocate stations are not being considered. Also, the department does not plan to eliminate the Almaty bike system, but is considering the possibility of introducing electric bicycles, depending on the interest and needs of users.

The goal of the Almaty bike project is to offer an alternative to car and public transport, providing an affordable way of transportation for residents and guests of the city.
