Belo Horizonte is on alert for rain showers of up to 50 mm, with lightning and wind gusts around 50 km/h.
The alert comes from the Civil Protection and is valid until 8am on Saturday (20th).
Civil Protection recommendations in case of rain
* Double your attention! Avoid flood areas and do not travel on roads subject to flooding or near streams and rivers during heavy rain.
* Do not cross flooded roads and do not let children play in floodwaters or near streams.
* Do not take shelter or park vehicles under trees.
* Pay particular attention to slopes and hills.
* Never go near broken electrical cables. Call CEMIG (116) or Civil Protection (199) immediately.
*If you notice cracks in the walls of houses or the appearance of cracks, depressions or water mines on the ground, immediately notify the Civil Protection.
* In case of lightning, do not stay in open areas and do not use electrical equipment.
Issuing warnings
Residents of Belo Horizonte can receive risk alerts for heavy rain, hail, storms, windstorms, floods, landslide risk and other weather phenomena via the public WhatsApp channel.
The population can also follow the Civil Protection warnings and recommendations via SMS. To register, simply send an SMS with your postcode to the number 40199 and a confirmation message will then be sent. The service has no cost.
