BH-bound plane makes emergency landing after pilot reports trouble

The pilots of a flight departing from Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, bound for BH had to make a route diversion following an emergency declaration, approximately 25 minutes after takeoff, this Monday (22/1).

In communication with air traffic control, one of the pilots used the expression “mayday”. According to the Aeroin website, specialized in aviation, the Azul Linhas Aéreas flight AD-4001 took off from the Governador Aluízio Alves International Airport, in Natal, in São Gonçalo do Amarante (RN), at 2.35 am and would have flown towards the Airport International Tancredo Neves Airport, from Belo Horizonte, to Confins.

According to data from online flight tracking platforms, the plane was at just over 36,000 feet (11 km) altitude when the pilots began the emergency descent and informed the controller: “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, Blue four zero zero one, rapid descent to level one zero zero.”

Again according to the site, although there is no official confirmation of the problem, the immediate descent to flight level 100 (“zero zero”) would indicate something related to the pressurization of the aircraft, “since at this altitude there are no minimally adequate conditions for the pressure needed to breathe without the aid of an oxygen mask.”

Experts further explain that the expression “mayday,” as defined by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANA), is an international code word for danger. When announced three times consecutively, it indicates serious and imminent danger and the need for immediate assistance for the aircraft.

The site also informs that, 45 minutes after descent clearance, the plane landed safely at 3.46am, back at Natal International Airport.

The report contacted Azul Linhas Aéreas to find out the reason for the emergency declaration. In a note, the company informs that, “due to technical problems encountered after take-off, flight AD4001 (Natal-Confins) had to return to its origin airport”.

According to Azul, the landing occurred safely and passengers disembarked normally. “The company underlines that customers are receiving all the necessary assistance, as required by resolution 400 of the National Agency for Civil Aviation (Anac) and will be re-accommodated on other flights. Azul regrets any inconvenience caused and reiterates that actions such as this are necessary to ensure the safety of its operations.”
