Better to merge weak banks with strong ones: Finance Minister – 2024-02-13 13:19:45

The central bank has taken initiatives to reform the weak banks and merge them with a strong bank in the future. In the meantime, Bangladesh Bank has asked the banks to be ready to implement this step. Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali agreed on this. He said, ‘It is better to merge the weak bank with the strong bank. We have two ideas about this. There are two or two banks, they are not able to work at all. Better to merge them with a strong bank.’

The finance minister said these things in a press briefing at his office in the secretariat on Thursday (February 8). Earlier, Zaindu Dey, the resident representative of IMF assigned to Bangladesh, held a meeting with the finance minister.

The finance minister said, “In this case, time must be given.” However, even if Bangladesh Bank is active in taking such a decision or implementing it, it is time consuming. The Ministry of Finance has not yet taken initiative in this regard.’

Finance Minister also held a meeting with Canadian Ambassador today. In this regard, he said, there has been a discussion about investment including reduction of duty on import of canola oil from the country.

Bangladesh has ‘passed’ the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) conditionality test, so the third tranche of the loan will be available on time—expressing optimism, the finance minister said, ‘Bangladesh is doing well in terms of IMF loans; Bangladesh has fulfilled most of the conditions they have given. They came today as part of regular activities. They will monitor the situation again in March. I hope that Bangladesh will get the third installment of the loan.
