Bengaluru: Bangalore school starts chapter on Tamannaah Bhatia

Bengaluru: A Bengaluru school has a Class 7 Sindhi language textbook that has a chapter on prominent and successful members of the Sindhi community, such as actors Ranveer Singh and Tamannaah Bhatia.Bengaluru Hebbal Parents of Sindhi High School in have reportedly complained about a chapter based on Tamannaah Bhatia in the textbooks. According to a Deccan Herald report, the parents brought the issue to the notice of the school management. However, their ignorance and absence of action forced them to approach the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the concerned management of primary and secondary schools in Karnataka.

According to the report, the school has a Class 7 Sindhi language textbook that has a chapter on “Life after Partition: Migration, Communities and Conflict in Sindh, 1947 to 1962”. A provision allows them to introduce students to their community and culture as they are a linguistic minority. Reportedly, the chapter features prominent and successful members of the Sindhi community such as actor Ranveer Singh. However, parents reportedly had a problem with the content related to Tamannaah.
The report quoted the parents as saying, “We have no objection to introducing children to another culture,” said a parent who lodged a complaint with the commission and the association. “But our objection is about having a chapter on an actor which is inappropriate for Class 7 students.” Some parents also reportedly accused the management of threatening to take their children out of the chapter if they objected.

Transfer Certificate will be threatened to issue notices. The portal reported that the school was unavailable for comment. “We have no problem with lessons on veteran actors in the community, but if children search the internet about this actress, they will find inappropriate content,” said a parent. “In any case, adding any content needs to be approved by the concerned board to which the school is affiliated. Parents should (therefore) bring it up with the board,” said D Sasi Kumar, general secretary of the association.
