Belgium: The situation in Rafah is very dangerous and we stress the need to prevent genocide

Brussels – Belgian Minister of Development Cooperation Caroline Guenez confirmed that the situation in the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, is very dangerous, stressing the need to prevent “genocide.”

This came in an interview with her yesterday, Monday, before she entered to participate in an informal meeting of development ministers of European Union countries in Brussels.

Guinness described the situation in Gaza as “the most dangerous humanitarian crisis of all time.”

She added: “The situation in Rafah is very dangerous, and for this reason it is very important that we continue to support innocent civilians, demand an immediate ceasefire, release prisoners, and call for providing more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.”

She explained that there is an order from the International Court of Justice stating that we need more humanitarian access to Gaza in order to prevent “genocide.”

It is noteworthy that Guinez had previously asked the International Criminal Court to open an investigation into war crimes against Israel, and indicated that Belgium was considering recognizing the Palestinian state.

Rafah is the last refuge for the displaced in the stricken sector, and it includes more than 1,400,000 Palestinians, including 1,300,000 displaced people from other governorates.

Since the beginning of the ground operation launched by Israel in the Gaza Strip on October 27, it has been asking residents to go from the north and center of the Strip to the south, claiming that they are “safe areas,” but it has not been spared from bombing homes, cars, and hospitals.

Rafah witnessed a bloody night in which dozens were killed and wounded as a result of violent Israeli raids and clashes between Palestinian resistance fighters and the Israeli army northwest of the city, which was crowded with displaced people, in clear Israeli disregard for international warnings.

Earlier yesterday, Monday, Anadolu’s correspondent reported that Israeli warplanes launched a violent bombardment on Sunday evening and early Monday morning, targeting displaced people near the Egyptian border and residential homes, and gunboats also bombed the seashore.

He stated that violent clashes took place between the Palestinian resistance and special forces from the Israeli army that penetrated northwest of Rafah, in addition to helicopters firing machine guns at citizens and displaced people.

At dawn on Monday, Izzat al-Rishq, a leader in the Hamas movement, said that the “massacres” committed by the occupation against civilians tonight in Rafah, in which more than a hundred martyrs were killed, are a continuation of the war of genocide and forced displacement.

Following the ongoing military operation in the Gaza Strip since last October 7, which left tens of thousands of victims, Israel faces accusations of committing “genocide” before the International Court of Justice, for the first time in its history.
