AREQUIPA, Peru – Several authorities of the Cuban regime in Santiago de Cuba led by the secretary of the Communist Party (PCC) in that province, Beatriz Johnson, visited the Los Pinos market in the José Martí district, one of the towns that took to the streets demanding freedom, food and electricity on March 18.
The independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada published a video on Facebook featuring the official, who in recent days appeared publicly in an attempt to wash the image of the dictatorship after the demonstrations.
According to the reporter’s sources, during the visit Johnson was listening to the opinions of the residents “but without giving convincing answers” about the precarious situation in which the territory finds itself.
On Monday night, the José Martí district was one of those that continued the demands of the massive popular protests that began the day before in Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Matanzas.
In addition to the tour, the PCC secretary celebrated the International Day of Happiness with a text that she shared on X (formerly Twitter).
“Happiness is a long-term feeling, which is built as time passes from the achievements achieved to build the type of life that everyone admires,” the leader wrote.
In the midst of the deep crisis that exists on the Island, marked by blackouts, food insecurity and hospitals without resources, Johnson’s publication shows the distancing of the Cuban dictatorship from the reality that afflicts the people.
Just 24 hours ago, Beatriz Johnson also offered statements to the local channel Teleturquino in another attempt to delegitimize the protests that occurred.
“We cannot deny that it was a very tense situation, but as always the people understood it,” said the leader in reference to her presence at one of the demonstrations, when the boos and demands of the people forced her to take shelter on a rooftop.
Likewise, he pointed out the lack of fuel and the blackouts as the main causes of popular discontent, thus ignoring the demands for freedom and the claims for food shortages.
