The United Nations envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, on Thursday, urged the Libyan parliament to intensify efforts to reach a political settlement that leads to elections in the country.
Batelli stated in his account on the “X” platform that he had, on Wednesday, a telephone call with the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, as part of the consultations aimed at reaching that settlement. He said: “We exchanged views on the current status of the political process, and I renewed my call to the House of Representatives to intensify efforts to reach a political settlement,” according to the “Arab World” news agency.
He added that it was agreed to continue consultations to push towards a political settlement that leads to holding elections and ensuring Libya’s unity and its achievement of sustainable stability and peace.
On Wednesday, Batelli discussed with the US envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, the status of the political process and efforts to bring together the main parties in the country, and reiterated his joint commitment to unifying efforts to urge the relevant Libyan parties “to engage decisively to put the country on the path to unity, stability and peace.”
The head of the Libyan National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba, is facing the worst period in his rule since his appointment, after the voices demanding the formation of a new unified government in Libya to change the status quo, driven by the deterioration of the financial, living and security situation of the country, rose and expanded.
In this context, Washington showed openness to forming a new government in Libya, as the United States Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland, stressed during his meeting with Dabaiba, on Tuesday evening, the importance of forming a caretaker government with the participation of all Libyan actors in the political process sponsored by the United Nations mission. For support in Libya, to remove the remaining obstacles to the elections.
