Syrian President Bashar Assad stated that he is open to any initiative regarding Syria-Turkey relations, as long as the sovereignty of the Syrian State over all its territory is respected and based on the principle of fighting against all kinds of terrorism.
SYRIA-Türkiye RELATIONS WERE MENTIONED
Syrian President Bashar Assad met with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Special Representative Alexander Lavrentiev in the capital Damascus. According to the statement made by the Presidency, Syria-Türkiye relations were also touched upon during the meeting.
“SYRIA’S SOVEREIGNTY MUST BE RESPECTED”
Assad stated that the basis of any effort to improve Syria-Turkey relations is “respect for Syria’s sovereignty.” Assad said, “We are open to any initiative regarding Syria-Turkey relations as long as the sovereignty of the Syrian State over all its lands is respected and is based on the principle of combating all forms of terrorism.”
RUSSIA IS READY TO IMPROVE NEGOTIATIONS
Lavrentiev reiterated that Russia supports all initiatives aimed at normalizing relations between Syria and Turkey. Stating that conditions now appear more favorable than ever for the success of mediations, Lavrentiev stressed that Russia is ready to work to advance negotiations. “The main goal is to normalize relations between the two countries,” Lavrentiev said. Turkey and Syria severed diplomatic relations in 2012 following the start of the civil war.
