The death of a young woman in Córdoba, caused by an obstruction of the respiratory tract while eating at a fast food restaurant, has revived a debate in the Tucumán Legislature. The Public Health Committee has already issued a favorable opinion on a bill to make it mandatory to display explanatory signs on how to perform the Heimlich maneuver in different establishments.
“This fatal situation can be avoided or overcome through a simple maneuver, the Heimlich maneuver, which has saved countless people from drowning since the 1970s,” said the author of the project, Claudio Vina“It is an abdominal compression technique to unblock the respiratory tract in case of obstruction, key in all first aid practices in cases of asphyxia due to choking,” he said, adding that it has the advantage that it can be performed by anyone with simple preparation.
If the initiative is approved, restaurants, recreational and educational establishments where food is consumed will have to display signs in a visible place with figures and instructions on how to perform the maneuver. “The signs will illustrate how to perform the maneuver on third parties, on oneself, on children and babies under one year of age. Likewise, some member of the staff or person in charge of the place must be trained to perform it,” said the parliamentarian from Compromiso Tucumán.
The project provides that the signs will be provided free of charge by the law enforcement authority. The State will also have to provide free training to those who require it. “I predict a prompt sanction and then an excellent acceptance and application of this very simple technique that, at no cost to the required establishments, can save a life in a few seconds in the event of a food obstruction,” he said.
